Revolutionary Romania
2023 Oil on canvas
About the painting
A woman in an embroidered white blouse and red skirt holds a small flame beside the Romanian tricolor. Behind her, the repeated arches of a monumental building give the figure a public, architectural setting.
The flag’s missing center brings a specific historical symbol into the portrait. The small light in her raised hand offers a quieter counterpoint to the broad sweep of color below. Donated to the National History Museum of Romania, the painting connects this image of remembrance with an institution dedicated to the country’s history.
Historical context
During the Romanian Revolution of December 1989, protesters removed the communist coat of arms from the national flag. The tricolor with a hole became an emblem of the revolution; that symbol appears in this painting.
